Better upfront planning could result in significant savings on oilsands project costs: survey

With ample oil supplies leading to longer-term lower prices, getting oilsands supply costs down is job number one across all sectors of the industry.

New engineering designs, technologies and business models are all being tested to make oilsands production competitive on the global market.

But another area with great potential to save costs is in project management. A study released by the Alberta Projects Improvement Network (APIN) in late 2016 shows using project management processes like stage-gating and advanced work packaging could result in major savings in capital costs in developing oilsands projects. COAA Best Practice: Advanced Work Packaging

COAA

Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) is a disciplined approach to improving project productivity and predictability. It accomplishes this by aligning planning and execution activities throughout the project life cycle, from project set-up to start-up and turnover.

COAA Best Practice: EPC Contract Base Document

The COAA EPC Contract Committee has developed a standard form EPC Contract for use in industrial projects. This EPC Contract is intended to serve as a base document and can be modified by the parties with respect to a specific project. Where possible, definitions used in the COAA Stipulated Price Contract (2003) have been incorporated in this EPC Contract in an effort to standardise terms. This EPC Contract should be considered to be an industry benchmark and a document that can be modified on a project-specific basis

COAA Construction Performance Best Practices

The COAA Construction Performance committee operates under a mandate to improve productivity in heavy industrial construction and industrial maintenance. The committee is developing next-generation tools for advanced work packaging, championing the implementation of workface planning and rework reduction strategies, and developing the tools and the culture for incorporating benchmarking into Alberta construction practices.

COAA Contracting Best Practices

The COAA Contracting committee is responsible for developing best practices that enhance efficiency and performance for all parties on industrial projects in Alberta. The committee's goal is to offer tools that help contracting parties be clear on the obligations and risks they are about to undertake, and maintain a consistent approach in contract development, preparation and administration in an effort to make contracting in Alberta's construction industry more efficient and cost-effective.

COAA Safety Best Practices

COAA Safety committee members are committed to improving safety and performance in Alberta's construction industry. They work collaboratively to identify, develop and support the implementation of innovative philosophies, practices and tools that help improve safety performance for owners, contractors and labour groups.
